Melding Digital and Paper

1 10 2008

I just read about a new site that allows people to design and write their own magazine – for free.  It’s a print on demand arrangement – if you wish to have a paper copy then it costs 20 cents a page.  The magazines already produced are really interesting with some phenomenal photography covering very diverse subjects.  The company is MagCloud at http://magcloud.com which is currently in beta.  They are only allowing publishing by invitation but you can sign up and explain what you would like to design and perhaps they will invite you.  Otherwise, it’s fun to just browse to see what people have felt passionate enough about to design a magazine.

This is a great melding of the new and the old and really quenches the desire to not only be able to see information but to touch it and carry it around.  Somehow the need to touch and feel things like books and photographs has not disappeared with the advent of digital technology.  And I doubt it ever will.

Below are three examples of the magazines found on this site.  Enjoy!
